New in this release  🚀

Portuguese Language Support

We are now supporting Portuguese as a language option in the Inspera interface. This applies to Inspera Assessment for both administrators and candidates but does not include Originality, Proctoring, and Integrity Browser. Contact our Service Desk to make the language available to your tenant.

Note some temporary limitations that will be fixed with the August release:

  • Text To Speech not yet supported in Portuguese if using Safe Exam Browser
  • The text editor is currently using some English words even if the candidate has selected Portuguese
  • Portuguese-authored questions are not supported, but the temporary workaround is to create the questions in the English version in Author (you can still enter your content in the Portuguese language).

Label Filtering Improvement

We are extending the possibility to filter on labels that have been added to questions. Until now, if filtering on more than one label, the result has been to show all content with any of these labels. However, there is a need to be able to search for all content that has all of the selected labels.

Other Authoring improvements

  • Fixed issue where Welsh authored questions were not available to candidates.

Deliver 🤖

Allowing Multiple Third-Party Applications in SEB Options For Computer Labs

We have allowed the use of up to five third-party applications in SEB options for Computer labs (Windows only). Earlier, we supported only one custom application.

More Flexibility for Group Submissions After the Test is Activated

Group submissions typically run for prolonged periods, which can lead to changes in group structure. In this release, we're clarifying what happens to existing drafts when a candidate is moved to a different group. We're also enabling group creation after a test is activated to streamline group management and splitting group scenarios.

Monitor 📊

Open Resubmission for Multiple Candidates Simultaneously

Some users of Inspera Assessment allow candidates to work on their essays across multiple lessons by opening for resubmission using Monitor. You can now open for resubmission for multiple candidates simultaneously. Previously, you could only open resubmissions for one candidate at a time.

Learn more about Opening for Resubmission

Alert in Monitor for Candidate Essay-Saving Issues

In some cases, auto-saving a candidate’s essay answer may run into some issues for example, they’ve added too many drawings. The candidate is informed with an error message. In this release, we've added an error message for Invigilators, notifying them of candidate essay-saving issues so they can offer assistance.  When the issue is resolved, the Invigilator will also be notified.

Improved Formatting for General Assessment Feedback

In Deliver, Planners can add general assessment feedback for all candidates and provide them with additional insight. We’re extending our formatting capabilities to enrich assessment feedback by adding more options such as text alignment, font colors, and many more.

Improved Header and Committee Navigation

Based on user feedback, we’re making improvements to the header in the marking interface so the information there is clearer, there is less repetition and it is more obvious how one can navigate to the committee selection page.

On the committee selection page, we provide more guidance for the user to understand where they are, and what they can do from there, as well as clarify some of the information in the table, and make it quicker and easier for them to see members of the committees so they can orientate.

New Features in the LTI 1.3 Integration & Standalone Applications

Administrator Account

  • Administrators can now add subjects on demand using the “Add Units” button located on the left side menu/panel. Created subjects are available for educators and students to join.
  • Administrators can now add additional educator and student accounts to the platform as well as edit or delete them.

Educator Account

  • Educators can now add subjects, a feature previously restricted to Administrators. Additionally, educators can duplicate subjects, simplifying the task of recreating them for the next academic year. They can also invite students to subjects independently, removing the need for administrator assistance/intervention.
  • Educators can create student accounts and invite students to the platform via email.
  • Educators can now upload documents and assess their originality. Educators are equipped with a dedicated page for their submissions titled “Your Submissions,” located on the left side menu/panel.  This addition provides ease of use and flexibility.
  • Educators can now accept or reject late submissions and resubmission requests from students, a new feature enabling students to submit assignments at a later time, conditional on the approval of their educator.
  • Educators can now perform both single and bulk uploads. This enables greater flexibility, allowing them to upload multiple documents simultaneously and removing the need to wait for student uploads.

Student Account

  • Students can now enroll in subjects using enrollment keys, removing the need to wait for enrollment invitations and allowing for faster registration processes. Students can still receive enrollment invitations from administrators and educators.
  • Students can now request late submissions or resubmissions to their educator, enabling them to submit or resubmit assignments at a later date, conditional on the approval of their subject educator.
  • Students can now find their assignments quickly using a dedicated calendar. The calendar displays past and upcoming assignments.

Generic Features that Apply to All Three User Types

Analytics Export

All three user types can now export data in file format. This capability enables users to download point-in-time information for offline use. The currently supported export file formats include .xlxs, .pdf, and .cvs. The data that can be exported mainly comprises statistics, allowing users to access this information without needing to log into Inspera Originality.

Assignment and Submissions Bulk Download

Users can now bulk download Originality Reports, streamlining this process and establishing efficiency.

This capability supports four bulk download formats:

  • Original Language Report
    • Download an offline version of Originality Reports only containing similarities found in the original language.
  • Translated Language Support
    • Download an offline version of Originality Reports only containing similarities found in the translated language.
  • AI Authorship Report
    • Download an offline version of Originality Reports only containing AI prediction findings.
  • Document File
    • Download the uploaded submission files.

New Assignment Configuration Features

  • Anonymous Submissions
    • Educators can now enable anonymous submission, enhancing privacy and keeping uploading student information undisclosed. The feature is available on the assignment level and conceals student names entirely from the user interface. Educators can reverse this action at any time.
  • Word Limit Settings
    • Educators can now set a word limit for student assignment submissions. Documents containing a higher word count than the specified limit cannot be uploaded. Educators can reverse this action at any time.
  • Citation Settings
    • Educators can now exclude citations from the Originality Report, allowing them to focus only on discovered integrity issues and similarity findings such as exact matches and possible altered text. Educators can reverse this action at any time.
  • Source Exclusion
    • Educators can now choose to exclude sources below a specific threshold, enabling them to focus only on sources with a high percentage of similarity. For example, setting the excluded source criteria to 5% will exclude any source with a similarity percentage below 5% from the Originality report. Educators can make adjustments to this setting at any time.

File Type Support

Inspera Originality now supports 18 more file types in addition to the currently supported formats, totaling 23 file formats.

Originality Report Upgrade

Text Manipulation

The text manipulation detection feature provides coverage against possible text manipulations such as character replacement, hidden text, or images in place of text. In this update, the text manipulation feature will be made available for the LMS integration and Standalone Applications.

  • Character Replacement
    • Character replacement refers to the action of replacing certain characters in a document with characters from another alphabet in an attempt to evade originality-checking. Inspera Originality can detect these changes comprehensively and with high accuracy. All character substitutes are highlighted in the Originality Report and an exact number of replaced characters is provided.

Exhibit A: Characters that are from other languages will be highlighted

  • Hidden Text
    • Hidden text refers to the action of concealing additional text or symbols within a document. This is achieved by adding text or symbols in document whitespaces and making adjustments to sizing and coloring. Inspera Originality can detect these alterations with high accuracy and pinpoint the exact whitespaces where text or symbols were inserted.

Exhibit B: Text that is hidden or colored in white will be picked up

  • Images in Text
    • This is where a snapshot of a text is included in a document and camouflaged as regular text in between paragraphs. Images of this sort are pinpointed and highlighted in red, allowing evaluators to understand that images highlighted in this color require attention as being possibly used to avoid originality checking. Regular images included in the document for illustration purposes are highlighted in green for clarity.

Exhibit C: Images that contain text will be highlighted in red

June release - Released June 4th, 2024

Heads up 💡

Monitor 📊

The Test Names in Monitor Are Now Clickable Links

In the Monitor module, it is now possible to click on a test name to open a new tab displaying the test information as presented in Deliver module.

Previously, if an Invigilator in Monitor wanted to view the test information for a candidate's test, or change the test settings, they had navigate to the Deliver module, search for the correct test, and click on it.

Author ✏️

Batch trash for Questions and Question Sets

Authors can select multiple questions or question sets in the Author module list to trash them at the same time. Previously, it was only possible to move one item (question or question set) to the trash at a time.

Grade 💯

Improved ‘Next/Previous Candidate’ Navigation

There are situations in which not all candidates answer all questions, for example, when candidates get to pick among a set of questions, or when random questions are pulled for each candidate.

For example, let's say you are grading Candidate A on Question 6. Normally, clicking the "next candidate" button would take you to Candidate B. However, if Candidate B did not answer Question 6, you would be taken to Candidate B on Question 1 instead.

With the new improvement, clicking "next candidate" will now take you directly to the next candidate who answered Question 6, such as Candidate C on Question 6. This ensures that graders can continue evaluating the same question across multiple candidates without interruption.

New Grading Scale Available for Activation

We’ve introduced a new grading scale with the following options:

  • Fail
  • Pass
  • Pass with Honors

This can be activated for your tenant by reaching out to our Service Desk.

Inspera Originality 🕵️

Swedish UI Support Added for Inspera Originality in Inspera Assessment

Inspera Originality now supports the Swedish user interface within the Inspera Assessment integration. This is an extension of the Swedish UI support for standalone applications and LMSs. To change the UI language, users must request with their Account Manager. Once the request is processed, all future Originality Reports will be in the desired language.

Other Originality Improvements

  • Submissions are now processed faster, improving candidate collusion detection further. The implemented improvements enable assessing simultaneous submissions faster, which allows Inspera Originality to provide quicker and more accurate originality check estimates.
  • Fixed an issue where certain special characters (tabs, vertical tabs, null characters) could cause submissions to be stored incorrectly. These characters are now removed to ensure proper submission storage while keeping the rest of the response intact.

Improvements to Decimal Separators in Numeric Entry and Numerical Simulation

We've received feedback regarding the clarity of entering decimal separators in numeric input fields. Currently, candidates can input either commas (',') or points ('.') as decimal separators in Numeric Entry and Numerical Simulation question types. However, Inspera converts commas to points, which may cause confusion for candidates. To address this, we're introducing two clarifications:

  1. In the “Author” interface, authors are informed of the conversion of commas into points.
  2. From the September release onwards, we will allow only points as decimal separators, and make it clear in both the candidate interface and the author interface.

Candidates trying to enter a comma will see this information box

You can benefit from this improvement before September by requesting the configuration that enforces points as the only decimal separator through our Service Desk.

Improved Communication on Submission Retention Policies

Up until now, when candidates submitted an assessment a default message was shown informing them it will be kept for 2 years.

However, a number of institutions are now leveraging Inspera settings that allow them to set a different retention period, or to let candidates delete their submissions. In order to reflect that, we’re updating the default message shown to candidates:

  • When no particular retention period settings are used, or when candidates can delete their submissions, no message is shown.
  • When the institution has some retention policy enforced in Inspera, then a general message is shown: "The period of time for which your submission is kept is determined by your institution". This allows institutions to handle candidates’ questions regarding the retention policy directly.

Note: Visibility settings are independent from retention of submissions, and are still shown if set.

Note: This usability improvement will be released slightly later than the May release, during the month of May.

Clearer search fields

In some areas of the platform, for example, while marking, the search fields are not obvious enough and users end up scrolling through a list. We’re updating the interface and adding a search icon to make it easier to understand that the list can be searched.

Note: This usability improvement will be released slightly later than the May release, during the month of May.

Inspera Originality 🕵️

Swedish language support in Inspera Originality

As of the May release, Inspera Originality now supports the Swedish language in addition to English. We are continuing to expand language options to include all languages supported by Inspera Assessment and will provide updates as they become available.

For our Swedish users, we have updated the terminology on the new Login Page to better align with the English language version. Please note that these changes are purely linguistic and do not alter any functionality. This update ensures consistency between the Swedish and English interfaces:

  • "Inloggning för studenter" → "Välkommen till student-inloggningen!"
  • "Logga in med användarnamn och lösenord" → "Eller logga in med registrerad Inspera-användare"

Assessment Path is Generally Available

Assessment path (AP) supports continuous assessment and allows you to group individual tests to be marked individually and graded as a whole. This can be activated for your tenant by reaching out to our Service Desk.

Assessment path serves various purposes, with the most common ones including:

  • Planners can create a series of individual tests to have their candidates evaluated based on their performance over a period of time. For instance, all individual tests planned for a course in a term or semester can be grouped, each with its unique weight to provide an overall grade to the candidate in the course.
  • Alternatively, it can be used for summative tests consisting of several components, each with its own time window, duration, graders, and feedback. A good example here is a language proficiency assessment that consists of 4 parts for assessing reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. In this case reading, writing and listening can be conducted as one continuous multi-part assessment (same time window), while the speaking test is scheduled at a different time.

AP includes the following capabilities:

  • Adding candidates to the whole assessment and its individual tests.
  • Including contributors and grading committees in the whole assessment.
  • Grading the assessment as a whole, manually or automatically (using thresholds).
  • Providing overall feedback explanations to candidates.
  • Supporting sum or weight of points for calculation of points.
  • Implementing marking workflows that allow confirmation of candidates collectively or individually and customization of collaboration settings for private/shared marking and grader confirmation.
  • Utilizing open APIs for assessment creation linked to individual parts.
  • Displaying a grouped view of the whole assessment with its individual tests along with a unified view of the results and feedback.
  • Tailoring the display of assessment results for candidates.

Note: Assessment path requires the New Candidate Dashboard that provides a better overview of all assessment activities. The New Candidate dashboard has been Generally Available since January 2024.

Manual Marking on Assessment Path

The Manual Marking on Assessment Path is designed to address use cases where manual calculation of grades at the parent level is required, especially in scenarios where grading on the Assessment path enabled, and individual tests are manually graded without assigned points.

The "Manual Grading" option, available under the "Select grading scale for parent" setting when the main evaluation type is Grade (not Points), facilitates manual grading by toggling off the display of "Calculation of Points" and "Threshold Values" sections.

Visibility of marks and grades on individual tests while grading Assessment Path

To streamline Grader access and improve efficiency, the following updates have been implemented:

  • Graders assigned to an Assessment path now have a broader view and can see the results of all tests within the Assessment path, not just the ones they were initially assigned to grade.
  • Graders now have complete read access to all details of individual tests, which includes the ability to view questions, responses, and marks for each.

These enhancements ensure that Graders overseeing the Assessment path can make informed decisions, especially when the overall grades are manually defined.

Multiple Attempts Improvements

  • Candidates can now initiate a Multiple Attempts test created through LTI integrations.
  • We've updated settings that are compatible/incompatible with Multiple Attempts to streamline test setup. For support with incompatible settings, reach out with your use case for consideration.

Assessment Path Improvements

  • Administrators can request explanations from graders with or without due dates. The feature has been relocated from candidate experience settings to grading settings, making it easier to manage.
  • The setup now defaults to the "Total Points" method for the calculation of points for the overall Assessment Path. When opting for manual grading, calculation options are hidden. If not choosing manual grading, the default is "Total Points," and users can switch to "Total Weights" if necessary.
  • The “Grouped” candidate view has been made the default view for Assessment Path.
  • The "Grouped" candidate view displays individual tests nested under the Assessment Path on the New Candidate dashboard. It provides candidates with a structured overview of all tests within the Assessment Path, enhancing navigation.
  • It is now possible to add SSO users to an activated Assessment Path.
  • When grading on the Assessment path is disabled, the entire "grading workflow" tab is now grayed out, ensuring consistency and clarity in settings configuration for admin users.

Inspera API Policy Update

This month we have published a new API policy. This policy sets out the terms that apply when a customer uses, makes contact with, or interacts with the external facing Inspera APIs. The policy can be found under the API section in the Inspera Help Center.

A heads up:  As mentioned in the API documentation, if an API is being called with a request rate that exceeds the maximum allowed rate (as defined in the API policy), an error message will be returned indicating that the request rate has been exceeded. Based on monitoring we see that most usage is already within these limits. We are in direct dialogue with customers where this is not the case. Starting in Q2 this year we will gradually roll out active enforcement of these limits across all API users

Open API for Test Activation

Customers can now enable immediate visibility of on-demand assessments for candidates without manual intervention.

Our new API (ref Open API for details) can be accessed through a simple POST request - POST /v1/test/{testid}/activate. In case of configuration errors, the API responds with a clear message and error code 400. In successful scenarios, expect a 200 response, confirming the operation's success.

Unlimited Attempts on Multiple Attempts

Planners can now enable unlimited attempts on a test utilizing Multiple Attempts. Candidates can take the test as often as needed - providing a more flexible and personalized learning experience.

Improvements and fixes made to Assessment Path with this release:

  • Previously, the steps between the Assessment Path and the individual tests were unclear. Now, clicking on a Parent ID directs users to the "Setup" tab in the Assessment Path UI, where they have visibility of individual tests under the Assessment Path.
  • Previously, disabling grading on the Assessment Path could be confusing due to the presence of test weights. Now, when grading is disabled, test weights are no longer shown. January release - Released January 9th, 2024

What’s coming up in January

New in this release  🚀

Author ✏️

Authoring improvements

  • Numerical Simulations question type (Beta):
    • We have enhanced the user experience by ensuring that authors are now informed of issues, such as program model complexity exceeding the capabilities of the candidate test player, at the time of compiling the program model.
    • As the candidates can only input their answers using numbers, all authored correct answers must be in number format (as opposed to eg. fraction format). To facilitate authoring, correct answers are now automatically converted to numbers where possible. For instance, if a variable yields the value ⅛, it is converted to 0.125.

Note: if the correct answer variable can take a different number of decimals each time a number is generated, we recommend allowing for Absolute or Relative Tolerance to ensure the candidates are not penalized for rounding.

Multiple Attempts is now Generally Available!

We have worked closely with our customers and early adopters to make several improvements over time, and are launching Multiple Attempts as generally available! We will continue making improvements based on market feedback.

By enabling Multiple Attempts on assessments, formative testing becomes a valuable tool for enhancing test-driven learning and empowering candidates to improve their understanding of key topics.  Learn more in the Help Center article, Multiple attempts.

Multiple Attempts drives test-driven learning with automatically-marked questions:

  • The planner can schedule assessments allowing for formative testing with multiple attempts so candidates can see how their score improves over time.
  • The planner can set the maximum number of attempts and candidates can retake the assessment up to the set limit.
  • The grading logic for final results can be configured to highest, average or last score.
  • Instant feedback and an updated final score are available to candidates on each submission, with an opportunity to retry/reattempt up to the set limit.
  • The automated marks show in the Marking 2.0 tool as for other automatically-marked questions with the ability to also grade the overall test.
  • The planner can download all attempts per candidate from the Marking 2.0 tool.
  • It supports Numerical simulations which allow unique randomized Numerical Questions on every attempt.
  • It supports the randomized question order, preventing reliance on memorization and promoting independent engagement with the content.
  • It supports timed attempts, which enforces a duration limit on every attempt.

Inspera Integrity Browser (previously Inspera Exam Portal) 💻

Version 1.16.0 released and renamed Inspera Integrity Browser

As mentioned in the last two release notes, Inspera has made two product name changes:

  1. Inspera Exam Portal (IEP) is now named Inspera Integrity Browser (IIB)
  2. Inspera Smarter Proctoring (ISP) is now named Inspera Proctoring (IP)

We are delighted to announce that, as of the January 2024 release, the products mentioned above have now been rebranded. You may notice these updates are reflected in both our product and support information going forward.

Version 1.16.0 (to be released during w/c 15th January) is the first IIB version to include the new name. There will be no name changes for the versions of IEP that we also currently support (1.14 and 1.15 series).

There are some instances where the Inspera Integrity Browser (IIB) name is referred to in Inspera Assessment, and therefore is visible to all users from January 2024, irrespective of whether IIB version 1.16.0 is used. In these cases we ensure that the new name is followed by a caption reading ‘(previously Inspera Exam Browser)’, to provide further clarification to our users. For example, Planners will see the following caption when setting up a Test in the ‘Deliver’ section.

Version 1.16.0 also includes a new Inspera app logo:

Note: For the moment we have not made any changes to the ‘/get-IEP’ URL used to download the application. This means that ‘/get-IEP’ will still be used to download IIB version 1.16.0. We expect to provide an equivalent  ‘/get-IIB’ URL in the February or March release.

For further information see our explainer guide on the Help Centre. To try out IIB 1.16.0 when it is released, contact the Service Desk.

Inspera Originality 🕵️

We are excited to announce that Inspera Originality can now be part of the assessment process! Institutions can integrate originality checking into their existing workflow and maximize educational outcomes. Please be aware that Inspera Originality is an additional feature and is subject to its own licensing fees. For more information please contact your account manager.

Originality Report is now available!

Institutions that opt-in for originality checking on their assessments can access the Originality Report. The Originality Report contains information related to the originality detected within the submitted document.

The Originality Report includes an Originality Index which is derived from the originality checking process that categorizes the document's originality level. The Originality Index is made of the following:

  • Similarity analyses: Explore traditional similarity checking, which assesses submitted documents against sources in both original and translated languages. Utilizing a percentage system, this method quantifies flagged similarity issues, providing a comprehensive evaluation of the document's alignment with existing sources.
  • AI Authorship: AI authorship is implemented within the originality checking process to determine whether there are possible instances of AI-written text within the document. It contains insights on a sentence level such as how many sentences are possibly AI-written.

Originality index

As a part of the Originality Report, users will be able to access the following features:

  • See submission details: View details on all submissions as part of the Originality Report.
  • Download: Download the entirety of the Originality Report for offline access in one of the following options: Original language report, Translated language report, and as a document file.
  • Originality Levels: The originality index contains three originality levels: High risk, Medium risk, and Low risk. These levels provide information on the levels of detected originality within the text.
  • Report Navigator: To ensure that users can easily navigate through multi-paged documents they can use the report navigator.
  • Sentence information: Users can access detailed sentence information when clicking on them. Moreover, they can: change sources, remove and re-include sources, and exclude sentences entirely.
  • Sentence highlights: After the originality checking is finished, users can access the highlighted sentences and gain more information about the found similarities. Sentences are highlighted in blue, green, red, and gray, and accompanied by names: exact match, possibly altered text, marked as quotation, and removed highlights. This classification is used to communicate the types of similarities that have been identified.

Note: Additionally, we are actively exploring the option of utilizing the institution's default language in cases where it is not specified in the test settings. The establishment of this default language will take part in the onboarding process.

Accessibility enhancements 🔍🖱️🔊

Navigation Menu updates:

We've made a few upgrades to the current navigation menu to enhance accessibility for users who rely on keyboards and screen readers, aiming to improve their overall experience.

Navigation menu correctly renders for 200% Zoom

Main navigation does not follow the Disclosure Navigation pattern. Expandable/collapsible elements are not indicated as such and cannot be collapsed. When tabbing, elements expand automatically and keyboard users must traverse all options rather than top level ones.

Enhanced Page Title for Increased Precision

The refined page title offers heightened accuracy and clarity, ensuring a more precise representation of the content and purpose of the page for users and search engines alike.

Pagination menu

  • Pagination controls marked as interactive.
  • Clear labels added to First/Last Page controls.
  • Improved indication for the selected item.

Contributors menu

In this update, the contributors' menu within the expandable/collapsible element has been appropriately marked up.
