Create a test with proctoring

This is available for Planners

Inspera Recorded, Record & Review, and Live Proctoring require activation. If you would like to find out more, please ask your Inspera account manager.

Inspera Recorded, Record & Review, and Live Proctoring offer a set of proctoring tools to help safeguard the integrity of your digital assessments. Note that these proctoring types are an entirely separate product from Inspera Resilience Proctoring. If you are unsure which proctoring product is right for you, see this explainer.

This article will walk you through the necessary steps to set up a proctored test as a Planner.

Note:

  • The term ‘proctor’ can refer to either an Inspera-provided proctor or your own customer-provided proctor.
  • A proctored test can support a limit of 500 candidates per test

Step 1: Create a new proctored test

  1. In Deliver, click Create new test.
  2. Select the test type Inspera Recorded, Record & Review, and Live Proctoring.

This creates a test set up that is specific to Inspera Recorded, Record & Review, and Live Proctoring, and offers a simplified user interface which excludes and hides any test settings that are not compatible with the proctoring products. Read the full list of incompatible settings.

Step 2: Choose the proctoring type

Choose the proctoring type you wish to apply to the test:

  • Recorded Proctoring: The candidate’s test session will be recorded (laptop camera and screen). AI-powered security detection and generation of flags. You are responsible for reviewing sessions post-submission.
  • Record & Review Proctoring: Same as Recorded except Inspera’s proctors will review the sessions post-submission and provide you with an integrity report.
  • Live Proctoring: A proctor will monitor the session in real time and can interact with the candidate via an inbuilt messenger. It also provides AI-powered security detection and generation of flags, as well as an integrity report. Find out more about what a proctor does in this article.

Step 3: Choose additional integrity features

Choose any additional integrity features you wish to apply to the test:

  • Secure Browser: Locked browser application to use specifically for proctoring. Ensures candidates only access the test contents and defined resources. Read more here.
  • Dual-Camera Proctoring: Requires candidates to set up their mobile phone as a secondary camera. Read more here.
  • Room Scan: Requires candidates to record a 360° video of their test environment. Read more here.

Step 4: Choose your "candidate to proctor" ratio

This is for Live Proctoring only.

For Live Proctoring you can define the candidate to proctor ratio by choosing between the numbers 4 and 8. This refers to the maximum number of candidates a proctor will be assigned for a test.

When setting this ratio you may wish to consider the cost of having more proctors for a session vs. the amount of close support your candidates may require.

Step 5: Define the instructions for proctors

This is for Live Proctoring only.

See the related article How to send instructions to the Proctor for more information.

Step 6: Set the time for the test

How you set the test time differs depending on the proctoring type you choose.

  • Factor in some time at the beginning of the test for the candidate to complete their proctoring onboarding steps. Typically candidates take around 10 minutes to complete this process, so we would advise adding at least this amount to the start time.

If you are using the Duration setting to control the test time, you should expand the time to allow for the proctoring onboarding steps as well.

  • Test timings are handled differently with Live Proctoring in Inspera. Ensure you read the guide below before setting up your Live Proctored test.
    • For Live Proctoring, 30 minutes is automatically added to the beginning of the test so the candidates can complete their onboarding and the proctors can review IDs and environment checks (e.g. Room Scan video if it is enabled for the test). Each candidate will have 30 minutes extra time added to their test to allow for this onboarding.
    • Once the candidate completes their onboarding, and their ID is approved, they will be held in a waiting room until the 30 minutes has elapsed. It is only at this stage that they are able to view the test’s contents. Read more about the candidate experience.
    • When setting the time for a Live Proctoring test, you are asked to only set the Test start time and Duration. The Test end time will be auto-calculated to include the 30 minutes for candidate onboarding time.

For worked examples on setting time for Live Proctoring, read more here.

Ensure you read and understand the rules regarding extra time and Live Proctoring

Step 7: Activate your test

The rules and prerequisites for activating your test differ depending on the proctoring solution you selected. Activation for Live Proctoring is an irreversible step that involves scheduling a human proctor, which has stricter timing and change limitations than activating Record or Record & Review tests.

  • For tests using Record or Record & Review proctoring, the activation process follows the standard Inspera Assessment activation rules:

No time limits or deadlines for activation:

    • You can activate or deactivate the test at any time before the scheduled test time.
    • There is no restriction on how many times you can deactivate and reactivate the test.

    Activation page information:

    • When activating the test, you will notice additional information on the activation page. This information will confirm that Record or Record & Review proctoring is applied to the test.
  • Activating Live Proctoring requires additional rules and considerations because it involves scheduling a human proctor. Below is a detailed guide on how to manage the activation of a test using Live Proctoring. Please take these into account before enabling your Live Proctored test.

    Key rules and considerations:

    1. One-time Activation Only:
      • Activation is Irreversible: Once the test is activated, a booking request for a human proctor is created, and you cannot deactivate the test unless the booking request is rejected.
      • Final Decision: Ensure all details are correct before activation, as the process is final unless rejection occurs.
    2. Non-Editable Test Details Post-Activation:
      • No Changes Allowed: After the test is activated, any details related to the booking cannot be edited. This includes:
        • Candidate details (including changes to candidate information, adding or removing candidates)
        • Test start/end time
        • Test duration
        • Test date
      • Double-Check Details: It is crucial to verify all information is accurate before proceeding with activation.
    3. Booking Lead Time:
      • Minimum Notice Required: Bookings for a live proctor cannot be made less than 7 calendar days before the test start date and time.
      • Plan Accordingly: Ensure you activate the test well in advance to meet this requirement and increase your chances of securing a proctor for the desired time slot.
    4. Two-Step Activation Process:
      • Step 1: Initiate the activation by reviewing the test details.
      • Step 2: Confirm activation by ticking the 'I understand' checkbox. This confirms your agreement to the terms of the booking request.
      • Important: Ensure you fully understand and agree to the booking conditions before proceeding.
    5. Booking Request Submission:
      • Automated Response: Once you submit the booking request, you will receive an automated response, normally within 15 minutes, indicating whether there is sufficient proctor capacity to fulfil the request.
      • Booking Rejected: If the proctor capacity is insufficient, the request will be rejected, and the system will allow you to deactivate the test by clicking the Deactivate button.
    6. Monitoring Booking Status:
      • Track Progress: After activation, you can monitor the status of your booking using the on-screen booking status indicators.
      • Review Status: For more details on how to review and understand the booking status, refer to the Review Status section of this documentation.

Step 8: Track your booking request

This is for Live Proctoring only.

After activating a test for Live Proctoring, the Planner will see various statuses indicating the progress of the booking process.

These statuses are as follows:

  • Indicates the deadline by which the test must be activated.

  • Confirms that the booking request has been submitted and is under automatic review by the booking system.

  • Booking request confirmed

Indicates that the booking system has successfully identified sufficient proctor availability, confirming that the session will be proctored.

  • Indicates that the booking request has been denied, typically due to a lack of available proctors for the selected time slot.

Each status is time stamped and visible on the Activation screen.

A detailed log of all booking process steps can be found in the Logs section of the test, by clicking the Logs icon on the Activated screen

See the Help Center article for more information on how to read the log.
