This article is for Planners.
This information only applies to tests using Live Proctoring.
Introduction
As part of the test setup process you are required to provide instructions for the live proctors, so that they know which proctoring rules to apply to the test. This information is shared with the live proctor and not your candidates. To share proctoring instruction with your candidates, please use the 'Test Information' box (see final section in this article for more details).
Creating Instructions for Proctors
You will provide proctor instructions by editing the template text provided in the 'Instructions for Proctors' free text box. Note that once the test has been activated, these instructions will no longer be editable.
You will see this template box only once Live Proctoring has been selected.
The template contains the following sections:
1. Determine access to permitted resources and devices:
Here you must choose one of three options, by deleting those that do not apply: Open Book, Partial Book, or Closed Book. Below are the definitions for each option.
Open Book:
Open book exam proctoring refers to exams permitting candidates to refer to external sources such as books, browsing, reference materials, etc. Additionally, candidates are allowed to utilise devices like calculators and similar gadgets during these exams.
Once the candidate has completed the onboarding process, they will be under the supervision of the proctor. The monitoring guidelines for an open-book exam are as follows:
- Candidates are allowed to use any form of material as part of their test. However, the proctor may not be able to confirm the legitimacy of these materials. Any suspicions of irregularities such as the use of AI-driven websites, Grammarly apps etc will be recorded in the proctor's report.
- Unless the client expects use of virtual machines or screen sharing as a potential cheating mechanism by the target candidate population, Talview Secure Browser is not recommended for open-book exams.
- Use of communication applications such as Microsoft Teams, Slack, WhatsApp, Zoom etc are not allowed.
- If the candidates are using any hardcopy materials such as books or handwritten notes, during the environment check, candidates must display the permitted materials on the camera.
Partial Book:
A "partial book exam" allows candidates to use up to three allowable materials. This limited access can take different forms, such as allowing the use of textbooks or notes while prohibiting access to online resources. Alternatively, it might permit external resources for only a portion of the exam duration.
Once the candidate has completed the check-in process, they will be under the supervision of the proctor. The monitoring guidelines vary depending on the exam.
Candidates are allowed to use up to three of the following items. No items outside this list can be monitored in this mode.
- Calculator
- Dictionary
- Scrap paper
- Textbook- with a specific name of the book/author(Proctor can validate only the name of the book, only printed copies no digital copies)
- Sheet of handwritten notes
- If candidates are using any hardcopy materials, such as books or handwritten notes, during the environment check, they must display the permitted materials on the camera.
Closed Book:
- Closed-book exam proctoring guarantees exam integrity by preventing candidates from accessing external resources, compelling students to depend solely on their knowledge and comprehension. This approach is especially beneficial for exams demanding a profound grasp of course material, such as final exams or certification exams.
- Once the candidate has completed the check-in process, they will be under the supervision of the proctor. Closed-book exams prohibit candidates from using any form of materials, such as notes, books, calculators, browsing, etc. The candidate's test area/desk should not have any materials that can influence the test.
2. Specify permitted resources and devices (Partial Book only)
This section is only relevant if you have chosen Partial Book for the test. Please select a maximum of three permitted resources or devices from the list. Other resources or materials will not be allowed.
3. Specify access arrangements
Choose the necessary access arrangements for the test. The Secure Browser is compatible with the accessible technologies listed in the table below. Please note, we cannot guarantee the functionality of other accessible technologies with the Secure Browser. To check compatibility, we strongly recommend testing your specific requirements before initiating the actual test. Additionally, any accessible software requiring browser access must be added as a resource to the question set in the Secure Browser.

Inform your candidates about the proctoring rules
Ensure your candidates are aware of the proctoring rules and conditions for the test. The most effective way to communicate this is by entering the necessary details into the 'Test Information' free text box during the test setup. This ensures candidates see the information as they access the test.
