Mandatory questions

This is available for Authors.

Mandatory Questions is a question setting that allows you to require Candidates to answer specific questions before they can submit their test. Without having answered mandatory questions the test cannot be submitted. This feature is designed to solve the problem of Candidates submitting tests without providing essential information, such as metadata required for Bachelor and Master Thesis.

This feature requires activation. Please contact the Service Desk to activate it for your Inspera Assessment tenancy.

How to Author a Mandatory Question

Once the feature is enabled, you will see an option in the question's settings to mark it as "Mandatory".

  1. Navigate to the question you want to make mandatory.
  2. Open the Advanced option and enable the Mandatory setting.
  3. By default, all questions are not mandatory.

This setting can be applied to all question types except Document

Mandatory questions are not supported in combination with the question delivery modes Pull or Candidate selected questions

How Mandatory Questions Affect the Candidate

  1. 1. Identifying Mandatory Questions

If Table of Content is enabled in the Design Settings, the Candidates will get an overview of any Mandatory questions:

Information is also available in the context of each question:

  2. 2. Navigation

Standard Navigation: If the candidate tries to navigate away from an unanswered Mandatory question, a warning modal will appear. They can choose to leave it unanswered for now.

One-Way Navigation: If One-Way Navigation is enabled, the candidate will be prevented from moving to the next question.

  3. 3. Submission

It will not be possible to submit as long as there are unanswered Mandatory questions on the test.

The submission page includes information on which Mandatory questions have not been answered so the Candidate can easily navigate back to answer these if there is time left.

If a test uses auto-submit and the test time ends, the test WILL NOT BE SUBMITTED if mandatory questions are still unanswered.

Exceptions and Procedures

The "Submit Blank" and "Withdraw" functions are not affected. A candidate can use these options at any time, even if Mandatory questions are unanswered. The Invigilator can also upload an Offline submission that contains unanswered Mandatory questions.

If a Candidate have not been able to submit due to unanswered Mandatory questions, Open for resubmission to allow answering these and then submit.
