Adjusting Question weights

  • Updated

This is available for Planners and Graders.

Question weight is available for Planners and Graders in the Grading module. It enables them to make adjustments during the grading process, such as setting a question's weight to zero to exclude it from the final grade calculation or adjusting the weight of the question.

This article explains how to enable Question weights in the Grading module and provides a step-by-step guide on how to set the weights, update the thresholds, and view the new results.

This feature requires activation. Please contact the Service Desk to activate it for your Inspera Assessment tenancy.

Access the Question weights

The Question weights setting will automatically become available after a test is generated, and cannot be used once a candidate's final grade has been confirmed.

It is important to note that Question weights are not available on tests that use pulling of questions, or candidate selected questions.

  1. To enable this setting, first go to the Grading module.
  2. In the Options menu, click the Options dropdown menu, and select Question weights.

OR

  1. Go to the Questions Overview workspace.
  2. Find the question you want to edit, click on the Option icon (three dots) and select Edit weight.

Question weight settings

Once you are in the Question weight settings, there are three settings that you can make adjustments to: Question weights, Threshold values and Update.

  1. Question weights

This is where you can edit your weights.

Underneath the Overridden weight column, click inside the field to change the percentage. Click Update to apply the changes.

    • Default weight is 100% which corresponds to a multiplication of marks by 1.0.
    • 200% weight will multiply marks by 2.0.
    • By setting the weight to 0%, results from the given question will not be taken into account at all.

When you apply the changes, the new weight is stored, and the system recalculates the candidate’s total marks. If the maximum total score of the exam has changed, the existing threshold conversion will no longer be valid. Because of this, the automatically calculated grades are removed, and you will be redirected to the Threshold tab. Here, a new threshold draft will be created for you to edit.

    Example:

Question 1, which is worth 10 marks, now has an Overridden weight of 50% instead of the default 100%. This means its maximum marks have been automatically changed from 10 to 5 marks.

  2. Threshold values

After you change a question's weight, the system suggests a draft of new thresholds based on the test’s new maximum score. You can make changes to this draft and set up a new threshold for the test.

Please note that you will not be able to calculate new grades until a new threshold value has been applied. For more information see the article on threshold value.

To save the changes, click Update.

    Example:

Because Question 1 was set to a question weight of 50%, the system automatically calculated a new range and percentage for the threshold values.

  3. Update

The update tab will recalculate automatic grades on behalf of all Graders.

    Click Update now to proceed.
