How to create a Demo Test

A demo test in Inspera Assessment is a valuable tool for candidates to prepare for regular tests and ensure system compatibility. A demo test behaves exactly like a regular test, with the key exceptions that candidates cannot submit their answers, and their responses are not stored.

This article explains how to create a demo test, details the limited options available, and outlines the candidate experience.

Demo test

In this video Fransesca explains what a demo test can be used for, how to create it and how it looks like for the test taker.

Why create a Demo Tests?

Demo tests are highly recommended to encourage candidates to check their Safe Exam Browser (SEB) installation and ensure their system is compatible with Inspera Assessment before taking a live test. The requirements for SEB versions in demo tests are the same as in regular tests, and updates to SEB versions approved by Inspera Assessment are automatically applied to demo tests.

Key Characteristics:

  • Candidates cannot submit answers.
  • Candidate answers are not stored.
  • The countdown timer has been removed from demo tests (it still counts down for all other Inspera Assessment tests).

How to create a Demo Test

To create a demo test, you start the same way you would for any other test:

  1. Go to Test overview in the Deliver module.
  2. Click Create new test.
  3. Then select Demo.

  4. Once the demo test is created, the rest of the initial setup process is similar to a regular test, as it mirrors the first part of test setup.

Candidates are not added to demo tests directly; if a candidate has access to Inspera Assessment, the demo test will be available from the Demo tests tab on their dashboard.

Options settings in Demo Tests

Demo tests have a limited set of configurable options compared to regular tests. This is because most settings are not required for the candidate experience, which is the main purpose of demo tests.

Security settings

You can set up the test to use Safe Exam Browser or Lockdown for Chromebooks. Passwords and invigilator passwords are set in the same way as for regular tests. For more details on setting up a test with SEB, refer to the Tests with lockdown browsers article.

Enabling Inspera Resilience Proctoring is not supported with Demo tests. If enabled for demo tests, it can cause issues with candidate experience.

As candidates will need both the SEB PIN and possibly the invigilator password, it is recommended practice to include these in the test information (visible on the candidate dashboard). Instruct candidates to remember or write down the invigilator password, as it will not be available once they have entered the test.

Other settings

  • This option may not be available as it is a configurable setting for your institution. Public demo tests cannot be used in combination with lockdown browsers; they are only available as open tests.
    • URL: When the demo test is activated, a URL to the test will be visible on the test front page. This URL can be accessed by anyone, and no login is required.
    • Note: The URL must be distributed to those who want to take the demo test; it will not be displayed in the candidate's dashboard. The purpose of this setting is to enable anyone to try out an open test in Inspera Assessment.
  • This adds the spell checker functionality for candidates.
  • Text to Speech requires activation and is not available in public demo tests. This allows candidates to have the question text read aloud. This option is also available in lockdown tests.
    • Functionality: Text to Speech is not turned on by default for the candidate. The candidate can enable or disable it through the options menu. Enabling Text to Speech applies to all candidates on a test; it cannot be enabled for individual candidates. The language used for Text to Speech is determined by the language the candidate has chosen in their options menu.
    • Compatibility: Text to Speech is available in tests with Safe Exam Browser and Inspera Lockdown app for Chromebooks, as well as in open browsers.
  • This option requires activation and is only available for public demo tests (i.e., once Enable public access is selected). You can add a URL to an external web page, and candidates will be redirected to that web page when they click Continue on the submission page of the demo test.

Some of these features require activation. Please contact the Service Desk to activate it for your Inspera Assessment environment.

Design settings and activation

The steps for configuring design settings and activating a demo test are generally the same as for regular tests. The exception is that assessment settings are skipped, as they are not needed for a demo test.

Candidate experience

Candidates who are logged into Inspera Assessment will find a list of available demo tests in the Demo tests tab on their dashboard.
