Question set design settings

Available for Author.

As an Author in Inspera Assessment, you can define the design settings of a question set, which controls how the test is displayed to candidates.

This article explains how to access and configure all design settings, clarifies the author and planner's roles and their interaction with these settings, and outlines important notes and compatibility warnings.

Understanding design settings

The design settings for a question set determine what your candidates see and how they navigate and interact with a test. They are set by the Author at the question set level, and while they are automatically applied to a test, a Planner can override these settings at the test level. The Planner’s changes will not impact the initial design of the question set itself.

How to access design settings

    1. In the question set's edit mode, click Design on the left side of the page.

    2. This will display a preview of the question set, along with different options in a panel on the right side.
    3. The right-side panel lists meta-information; time and date for the last update, number of questions, and maximum score, as well as several settings options for how you want the test to be displayed for candidates.

    3. The right-side panel will first list meta-information; time and date for the last update, number of questions, and maximum score.
    4. Several options are available for how you want the test to be displayed for candidates. These options also allow you to add or remove some functionality for candidates.

Design setting options

The settings options allow you to customize the interface, navigation rules, and add or remove functionality for candidates during a test.

These are the options settings you can choose from:

  • Layout

    • Question numbering style: There are three styles to choose from: Test sequential, Section alphanumeric, and Section numeric.
    • Enable navigation bar: This will hide the navigation bar shown in the preview. Candidates will still have the option to navigate back and forth in the test, and if the table of contents is enabled, they can also use this to navigate.
    • Table of contents: This shows a table of contents on the first page of the test. It will also be available on the navigation bar for easy access.
    • Hide question title: If Authors use question names that are not intended for candidates, this option will hide the question names for candidates.
    • Question maximum marks: This will display the maximum marks for each question. The candidate cannot check their own answer before submitting; the check answer function is only available for the Author for verification purposes.
    • Show progress indicator: This displays a progress bar to show the candidate how far they have come in the test. This is especially useful if the navigation bar is hidden.
    • Show help for keyboard-based drag interactions: This displays a Help button on questions using drag elements. Clicking this will provide a short guide on how the candidate can use the keyboard to move the drag elements across the screen.
  • Navigation

    • One-Way Navigation: This feature is designed to prevent backtracking. Enabling it allows you to prevent candidates from navigating back to previous test questions.
      • Allow candidate to dismiss confirmation: This option lets candidates dismiss confirmation prompts for faster progression.
      • Prevent candidate from continuing offline: This option requires candidates to maintain an online connection to progress. This prevents candidates from continuing with the test until a connection is restored.
    • Show warning when navigating away from pages with incomplete responses: A warning will show if a candidate tries to navigate away from a question that has not been answered. This is especially useful if navigation back is disabled.

This feature does not work on Chromebooks and is not compatible with the Code compile question type.

    • Highlight next button when responses are completed: Make the Next button shake a bit once a candidate has responded to the question to encourage them to move on to the next question.
  • Feature

    • Flagging: This will show a small clickable flag at the top of each question. The purpose is to give candidates a method of flagging questions they might want to review before they submit. If a candidate flags a question, the flag will display at the corresponding position on the navigation bar.
    • Notes (Beta): The note-taking and highlighting feature allows candidates to highlight text and take notes during a test. This option is not standard and requires activation. Contact the Service Desk for more details.
  • More options

    • Numbering Scheme: This determines how the navigation bar will be displayed. For question sets with sections, this can be a useful setting for giving candidates a better overview of different sections. Three options are available.
    • Hide navigation bar: This will hide the navigation bar shown in the preview. Candidates will still have the option to navigate back and forth in the test, and if the table of contents is enabled, they can also use this to navigate.
    • Disable navigate back button: If you want to prevent candidates from revisiting a previous question, you can enable this option. It is important to also hide the navigation bar and table of contents if these are active, as candidates can navigate using these instead.

While this is intended to work in tests with lockdown browsers, there might be situations where it doesn't. We strongly recommend that you use One-way Navigation to fully prevent navigation in the test, as this feature is made specifically to ensure exam integrity where navigation is required to be limited.

    • Show sections in table of contents: If the question set consists of several sections, this option determines whether candidates can see the section names in the table of contents. This is generally recommended for a table of contents.
    • Show warning when navigating away from pages with incomplete responses: A warning will show if a candidate tries to navigate away from a question that has not been answered. This is especially useful if navigation back is disabled.

This feature does not work on Chromebooks and is not compatible with the Code compile question type.

    • Disable Next button until question is answered: The next button will be disabled until the candidate have given an answer to the question. Once answered, the button will be clickable again.
    • Show rubric as a resource for applicable question(s): This allows candidates to view the grading rubric as a resource during the test.
