Question with multiple alternatives and one correct answer. 

Multiple Choice is a question type where the candidates will answer the question by selecting one alternative. Alternatives can include plain text, rich text (LaTeX), sound or images.

This article explains the layout of Multiple Choice questions, details their specific options and how to set alternatives, covers predefined feedback per alternative, and outlines known errors related to certain alternative types.

Question layout

In the question's edit mode, you can do the following:

  1. Replace text with desired question text.
  2. You can enhance your question text by adding math (LaTex), files, tables, links, image, PDF, audio or video clips.
  3. Insert more interaction elements by pressing +Insert.
  4. Set general options for the question type. Read more about general options for questions

Specific options

Clicking on the interaction element (the alternatives area) provides access to specific options unique to the Multiple Choice question type:

  1. You can write an explanation text for the question. This text will appear in the workspace above the alternatives. Select one alternative: is set by default. 
  2. Update the alternatives by selecting the type of alternatives and enter the answers in each Alternative textbox.

    • (1) Choose between four type of alternatives: Text, LaTeX, images and sound. You cannot combine the different types in one and the same interaction element.
      • You can format plain text by clicking on Rich text, available under each alternative. LaTeX is also accepted as input when clicking the Sigma button.
      • Images as alternatives will automatically be scaled to a width of 150 pixels, but can be manually resized.
      • You add sound by clicking on Add sound file (mp3). Complete the alternative by adding text. 
    • (2) Layout of alternatives: Choose between vertical or horizontal layout for the alternatives. Vertical layout is standard. Horizontal layout will look like this:

    • Click on the "radio" buton for the correct answer for the alternative: Green circle indicates correct answer.
    • Click on "Add alternative" to add more alternatives. If you want to remove an alternative, click on the X icon in the corner next to the alternative.  
  3. Lower and upper mark limit: You can set these for each interaction element. The value will override the mark settings applied for the whole question. For more information, refer to the Advanced scoring article.

    Random order of alternatives: Choose whether candidates should have a different order of alternatives. This option is selected by default. If you prefer it is not selected by default please reach out to our service desk.

    Confirm the automatic marks for the question by Answering the question in preview. You cannot change marks after the test has started. 

  4. An External Identifier is a unique string that helps link the question to external systems for data collection, without serving any internal purpose in Inspera Assessment.

Predefined feedback per alternative

This feature requires activation. Please contact the Service Desk to activate it for your Inspera Assessment tenancy.

This question type supports predefined feedback per alternative. Candidates will see this feedback along with their access to their answers after the submission. This can be set by the Planner.

Click on Add feedback in the Alternatives tab to provide feedback for individual alternatives.

Known errors

If you add image or sound as an alternative, these may not work. This issue is often seen in combination with multiple language versions, but can also affect questions with only one language version.
