Adding a template to an existing test allows you to update a test with predefined settings from a template. This is useful for users who create tests using an API and want to add a template after the test is created in Inspera Assessment.
This article explains how to apply a template to a test and details which fields are updated and which are not.
How to add a template to a test
- Go to the Test overview window in the Deliver module.
-
Select the test you want to update, and in the Setup click on Select template.
- Choose a template from the list.
-
A confirmation message will appear, telling you which settings will be updated. Confirm the action.
- After you confirm the action, the test updates with the template's data. A note in the Setup window will show you which template the test was updated with.
- You can preview the template you have chosen in a new window by clicking the preview icon next to the template name.
You can add templates to a test multiple times as long as the test is not activated. However, once a test is activated, you cannot add a new template. You can deactivate a test to add a template, but only if no candidates have started the test.
How fields are updated
When you update an existing test with a template, all fields in the test are overwritten with the data from the template, except for a few specific fields. Fields that do not have data in the template will also be updated in the test.

These fields will not be updated:
Name
Time and Duration
Candidates

Important overwrite exemptions
When a template is applied to an existing test, certain fields are exempt from the standard overwrite rules.
- The way the question set updates depends on whether a question set already exists on the test or the template.
- Committees and contributors on the existing test will not be removed when you apply a template.
- Any committees or contributors from the template will be added to the test, in addition to what is already there. You can remove these extra contributors from the test after adding the template.
- The way the question set updates depends on whether a question set already exists on the test or the template.
- Scenario 1: If a question set is added to the test prior to the template, and the template does not have a question set, the question set on the test remains unchanged
- Scenario 2: If a question set is added to the test prior to the template, and the template also has a question set, the question set from the template replaces the one on the test.
- Scenario 3: Neither the test nor the template has a question set. The test remains without a question set.
- Scenario 4: The test does not have a question set, but the template does. The question set from the template is added to the test.
- The system only updates the design and assessment settings if the question set is updated.
- If the question set updates from the template (Scenarios 2 and 4 in the Question set section above), the design and assessment settings are also updated.
- If the question set is not updated (Scenarios 1 and 3 in the Question set section above), the design and assessment settings are not updated.
- When the assignment is synced with a FS, if the grading scale came from FS, applying a template will not change the grading scale.
- In today's functionality “create new test from template” the Access Group is not included. Therefore this specification also includes necessary changes to today's solution.
-
Create new test from template
- When you create a new template from a test, the Access Group is included in the template.
- When you create a new test from that template, the Access Group from the template is included in the new test.
-
Add template to an existing test
- When you update an existing test with a template that includes an Access Group, the Access Group is copied over to the test.
- However, if the template does not include an Access Group, the Access Group field on the test is not overwritten.

When applying a template to a test (or creating a test from a template), the Translations setting will always be disabled. The Planner can then enable it if needed.
