How to Grade using AI Suggestions

Identifying and Navigating AI-Assisted Submissions

Locating AI-Supported Questions:

  1. Open your assigned assessment in Marking 2.0.
  2. Navigate to the List of Questions table in the Candidate in Focus or Questions Overview view.
  3. Look for the new 'AI supported Marking' column. Questions flagged for AI assistance will display an 'Enabled' status in this column.

The AI Grading Interface: When you open an eligible submission, it opens in the Inspera Graide interface which can be slightly different from the native interface.

  • Purple Highlights: Indicate AI-generated suggestions, accompanied by a confidence indicator.
  • Blue Highlights: Indicate manual marks or overrides applied by a human grader.
  • Use AI Suggestions Toggle: Located at the top of the interface. You can toggle this to OFF to hide all AI indicators and perform a blind manual grade. Toggling it back ON will restore the AI suggestions without losing your manual overrides.

Reviewing, Overriding, and Confirming Marks

You must explicitly confirm the grade for every submission, regardless of whether you accept the AI's suggestion or apply your own.

Applying and Confirming Marks:

  1. Review the AI suggestion (highlighted in purple).
  2. If you agree with the suggestion, click the 'Done and Next' button. This confirms and updates the mark, and moves you to the next question.
  3. If you navigate away using standard dropdowns without clicking Done and Next, you will receive an "Unsaved markings" prompt requiring you to save or discard your progress.

Overriding AI Suggestions:

  • If you disagree with the AI, simply edit the score or feedback directly in the grading panel. Your manual edits will appear in blue.
  • Resetting: If you make a mistake or wish to discard your manual edits, click 'Reset' in the UI. This will revert the submission back to the AI's original suggestion (or to a blank state if the AI is still training).
  • Important Note: If you edit a submission after you have already confirmed it, its status will reset to "Not Marked." You must click Done and Next again to re-confirm the new score.

Working with Rubrics and Feedback Banks

The AI models generate suggestions based on the specific marks settings (Rubrics, Criterion, or Maximum Marks) attached to the question by the Author.

1. Grading with Rubrics for both Essay Type and Text Area

Rubrics are created along with the questions. In the grading interface, they are read-only and cannot be structurally altered during grading.

  • Selecting Bands: The grader can confirm or override the AI suggestion in the grading panel which is on the right side of the page. Alternatively, they can click the rubric overlay button to open the full rubric structure. Select the appropriate performance band for each criterion.
  • Adding Feedback: Click the arrow icon next to a rubric name to expand a dedicated feedback text box. Feedback is saved specifically to that rubric criterion.

2. Grading with the Feedback Bank

For questions with 'Criterion' or 'Maximum Marks' in the marks settings -

  • Applying Reusable Feedback: Highlight a portion of the student's text and select 'Add from feedback bank'. Choose an existing comment to apply it to the text.
  • Creating New Feedback Items: Click 'Add' in the Feedback Bank. Type your comment, classify it as Positive (Green icon) or Constructive (Red/Brown icon), assign marks, and click 'Save'. This adds the item to the bank for future AI training.
  • One-Time Comments: If you want to leave specific feedback without adding it to the reusable bank, highlight the text and select 'Add one time comment'
  • Important Note: It is possible to have Feedback items (Criterion) that will add up to more than the maximum marks. There can be scenarios where the AI suggestions can add up to more than the maximum marks. While the combined value of applied Feedback Items can exceed the question's maximum marks, the final score is strictly capped at the maximum limit. This cap applies automatically whether you confirm the AI's suggestions or manually override them.
