Private Content for Item Banks

The September release introduces new privacy controls for content in Item Banks. Individual questions and question sets can be set to:

• Public – available to all users who have access to the Item Bank.
• Private – available only to the content creator, unless explicitly shared with eligible Item Bank members or associated Access Groups.

At the tenant level, administrators can set the default privacy for new content as Public, Private, or User-defined. With User-defined, the Item Bank Manager can choose whether new content is Public or Private when creating an Item Bank.

For customers who want Item Banks to work most like the existing Unbanked space, we recommend setting the tenant-level default to Private. New content will then be visible only to its creator until it is explicitly shared with other users who need access.

Changing an Item Bank’s default privacy affects newly created content only. Existing content retains its current privacy setting unless it is changed separately. 

This functionality, and the functionality listed below, are opt-in. Please contact the service desk to activate these features. 

Converting privacy settings for specific content items

Users with the required permissions can change the privacy of individual questions and question sets from Public to Private, or from Private to Public. The change can be applied to one content item or to several selected items at once.

If required, a tenant-level setting can be used to restrict these privacy changes to one direction. For example, with a Private tenant-level default, users can change Public content to Private, but not Private content to Public. If no restrictions are selected then changes in either direction are possible.

Two-Step Confirmation for Removing Access Groups and Custom User Roles

The September release adds a warning and two-step confirmation when removing Access Groups or Custom User Roles from an existing Item Bank.

This confirmation is shown when the change may affect users’ access to the Item Bank or its content. The change can only be saved after the Item Bank Manager confirms that they understand the potential consequences. 

New Custom User Role Permissions

Four new Custom User Role permissions provide more granular control over Private Content and authoring workflows:

• Change Content Privacy – allows users to change individual questions and question sets between Public and Private, subject to the tenant-level privacy conversion settings.
• Re-share Private Content – allows users to share Private Content with other eligible Item Bank members after the content has been shared with them.
• Share Own Private Content – allows content creators to share their own Private Content with eligible Item Bank members or associated Access Groups.
• Questions within a Question Set – allows users to create questions from within the Question Set editor without giving them permission to create standalone questions from the Question List.

Sharing Private Content

When sharing Private Content, the content creator can choose the user role to apply to the recipient. The available role must be enabled on the recipient’s profile and associated with the relevant Access Group for the Item Bank. When sharing with an Access Group, only members who have the selected role enabled on their profile will gain access to the content. The Author and Planner roles may also be available where applicable. 

Official Support for SEB 3.7 for MacOS 

We are excited to announce that we have updated the version of Safe Exam Browser to 3.7 for MacOS.

OpenCV library used in IRP to raise events, upgraded from 4.5 to 4.13 

As we continue to improve our IRP flags within Inspera Resilience Proctoring, we have refined the event detection to prevent false positives for "person entering" and "person leaving" frame events caused by abrupt left-to-right head turns or front-and-back leaning.

This feature is controlled via an MPP toggle and is supported across both IIBv1 and IIBv2.

Moderation (Early Access)

Assignments can now include a moderation stage that runs alongside marking. As each question is marked, it becomes available for moderation. Moderation can be enabled and configured in the new Moderation section of the assignment settings, though this section will only appear if the feature has been enabled for your organisation. To request access, please contact the enablement team. Once enabled, moderation can be turned on or off per assignment at any time, even after it has gone live.

When enabling moderation, you choose which submissions will be moderated. Currently there are two options:

All students - every submission passes through moderation after marking.

Choose students manually - select specific learners whose submissions will be moderated.

Automatic random selection modes are planned for a future release.

The Moderation Queue

Once a submission within scope has been marked, it moves automatically into the moderation queue. A progress bar on the assignment home page shows how many submissions are ready to be moderated.

The Moderation Interface

The moderation interface works similarly to the marking queue, and navigation follows the same workflow mode set for marking,  either question-by-question or script-by-script. Moderators can add, edit, or remove feedback to override the marker's work where needed.

Rather than marking something as simply "done", moderators choose from three outcomes:

Approved - the marking is deemed acceptable (with or without amendments) and moderation is complete for that submission.

Flagged for review - marks the submission for further discussion, such as consulting with the marker or other moderators before a final decision is made.

Send for remarking - returns the marking stage to "to do", requiring the marker to remark the work. Existing marking is preserved unless the moderator chooses to remove it.

Gradebook Updates

New Progress View: The gradebook now includes a Progress view, giving a detailed breakdown of where each submission stands, from the learner completing their work, through marking, and now moderation.

Progress is tracked at the individual question level for each submission, with the following stages:

Not started - The student has not begun the assignment, or has not yet answered this particular question

In progress -The student has started but not submitted their answer

Submitted - The student has submitted; at the marking stage, this also indicates questions not yet marked

Marking in progress - The question has been partially marked

Marked - The marker has marked this question as done

If moderation is enabled for the assignment, three additional stages will appear in the progress view:

Sent for remarking - The moderator has returned this question to the marker

Flagged for review - The moderator has flagged this question for further discussion

Approved - Moderation is complete for this question

Question columns in the progress view can be sorted by stage, in either ascending or descending order. The legend has also been updated to more clearly display progress icons and flags.

Changes to existing behaviour:

The submission stage indicators previously shown in the Grades view have been removed and replaced by the new Progress view. The Grades view now shows a dash (–) for unsubmitted assignments and the current mark for submitted ones, as before.

The flag previously used to indicate either unmarked submissions or missing PDF feedback has been updated to now only indicate missing PDF feedback. Unmarked submissions are better communicated through the marked time column and the new progress icons.

Early Access

Grading Workflows

We are very excited to announce that the much anticipated feature, Grading Workflows, will soon be coming to the end of its time in Early Access. Before that time comes, however, we have some new improvements to Grading Workflows we would like to share. 

With September's release we introduce a new option under Allocation called ‘Distribution’. Here you can decide whether candidates are randomly allocated to graders or, using the new functionality, explicitly state which candidates go to which graders. This functionality not only ensures graders can mark (or not mark) certain submissions, but always allows you to ensure the same candidates go to the same graders across multiple phases if required.

The new "Allocate by Question" functionality is also still in development. For current early access Grading Workflow adopters, the early access notes you receive will contain more details on what is and isn’t possible at the moment.

The CSV downloads on the dashboard now include a test-wide download, not just phase level.

And finally, the ‘Based on' and ‘Applied to’ settings under Rules have been moved to the top of the step. This was a technical decision with the future in mind. It’s to ensure that when new Rules functionality is added, it won’t affect older workflows.
