Grade candidate-selected questions (Classic marking)

  • Updated

This is available for Graders.

The Candidate-selected questions setting allows candidates to choose which questions they will answer from a set created by the Author. The Author also decides the maximum number of questions a candidate can select.

This article explains how to grade these submissions and how the threshold values are affected.

This feature requires activation. Please contact the Service Desk to activate it for your Inspera Assessment tenancy.

Grading submissions

As a Grader, you will only see the questions the candidate actively selected and submitted. You will not see the questions they did not choose to answer.

  • The number of questions answered can vary between candidates, as they are free to submit fewer than the maximum allowed number.
  • If a test section uses this candidate-selected questions, a yellow information banner will appear to let you know that the candidate selected their questions.

When using InsperaScan and Candidate-selected questions in tandem, if a candidate incorrectly fills in a Question code to a question that they have not selected to answer, the question submission will appear blank.

Threshold values

The threshold values are always based on the maximum achievable marks for the entire question section, regardless of how many questions a candidate actually selected.

Example:

  • If a candidate can select 3 questions worth 10 marks each, the section total is 30 marks. The thresholds are based on this 30 mark total.
  • If a candidate only submits 2 questions, the threshold is still based on 30 marks, even though the candidate can only achieve a maximum of 20 marks. This is why a candidate who submits fewer questions may not be able to achieve the highest possible grade.

  • By editing the threshold values, you can make sure that a candidate who selected fewer questions cannot achieve a grade higher than what is mathematically possible for them.
