Manage Grading Scales for tests

  • Updated

When setting up a test in Inspera Assessment, Planners can define a grading scale that matches their course objectives and standards.

This article explains how to set a grading scale for your test, outlines the various supported grading scale types, and details the configuration options including choosing to use marks only.

Understanding grading scales

Grading scales are used to evaluate candidates in a predictable and reusable way, converting raw scores into predefined results (e.g., A-F, Pass/Fail, or a numerical scale). For example, a Planner may choose a 100-point scale where 90-100 is an A and 80-89 is a B, or a letter grade scale like A-F.

How to set a grading scale

The grading scale must be set in order to activate a test.

  1. Choose a test or create a new test in the Deliver module.
  2. In the test settings, go to Assessment settings.
  3. Locate the Grade Scale and select Use grade scale.
  4. Click on Set grade scale and select the desired grading scale from the dropdown menu.

Using marks only (without a grade scale)

You have the option to utilize only the achieved marks as the final result for a test, without converting them to a specific grade scale.

  1. Within the Grade scale in Assessment settings, select Do not use grade scale.

The Use grade scale option is selected by default. If you prefer the default selected option to be Do not use grade scale, please contact the Service Desk to change this default setting for your institution.
