the Graphic Gap Match question type icon.

Automatically marked question.

Candidates answer the question by dragging and dropping alternatives with plain text, rich text and math, or images, onto an image.

This article explains the layout and two-level setup of Graphic Gap Match questions, details main setup options and individual gap configurations, and outlines known limitations.

Note:

  • If using an iPad when answering a Graphic gap match question then press the object for a little while before it lifts and follows to where you want to drag it. It does not work to just drag the object, you need to press it for a little while first.
  • For tablet devices, we recommend disabling the option to rotate the screen during tests with this question type. Rotating between horizontal and vertical views on a tablet device can cause the screen to freeze.

Question layout

This question type allows you to create interactive matching activities where visual elements (an image background) are combined with draggable text or image alternatives. The predefined text boxes or areas on the image serve as the drop targets for candidates' responses.

In the question's edit mode, you can do the following:

The question editor interface, showing the question text, the toolbar and the general options panel.

  1. Replace text with desired question text.
  2. Add math (LaTex), files, tables, links, PDF, images and / or audio clips to the question text.
  3. Insert more interaction elements (gaps) by pressing +Insert. For more details, refer to the Graphic Gap Match Specific Options in the Gap Setup section below.
  4. Set general options for the question type. Read more about General options for questions

Specific options

This question type has two different choices of options. One for Main Setup, and one for Gap Setup and correct answers. To switch between them, you may need to click twice on the work area.
  • You access this panel by clicking on the overall work area. This panel controls general question options and the overall behavior of tokens (drag elements) and gaps (drop areas).

The specific options for the question type.

    1. Selection of type of drag element (token) and size for tokens and gaps.
      • Token type: Choose from plain text, rich text and math, or images. You cannot mix types.
      • Token size: Choose between Auto-size to largest token or Individual size on the drag elements.
        • Auto-size to largest token: All the tokens will be the same size.
        • Individual size: Different size on the tokens. The size is depending on how many letters, math symbols or digits there are, or how big the image is.
      • Gap size: Choose between Individual size or Same size on the drop areas. You can change the size under Gap Option in the Gap Setup.
    2. Write an explanation text for the question. This text will appear in the workspace above the tokens.

Interface for writing the prompt and candidate instructions.

    3. Upload the background image to the question by pressing Upload image. The predefined width is 800 pixels, but this can be changed manually.
    4. Add incorrect answers (distractors). For each wrong answer you add, a new drag element (token) box appears, but this element will not have a match in the question text.

Interface for adding additional wrong answers (distractors).

    5. Choose how the answer alternatives (tokens) are placed, sorted and reused.
      • Position of tokens: Choose from interaction header (default), interaction footer and pin right. This is where the tokens shows up in the question at start.
      • Order of alternatives: Choose from random (default), ascending by identifier or ascending by alternatives. You can rename the identifier in the Gap Setup.
      • Reuse of alternatives: Choose whether to allow the candidate to use answer alternatives again, or not. Not allowed is set by default.
      • Dropping tokens in populated gap: Choose between replacing the token, or add token and expand the gap to fit.
    6. An External Identifier is a unique string that helps link the question to external systems for data collection, without serving any internal purpose in Inspera Assessment.
  • By clicking on one of the gap identifiers (drop areas) in the background image, you will enter the setup for the individual gap identifier. This panel allows you to configure individual gap properties and define the correct answers for that specific gap.

The specific options for the question type.

    1.  You can resize (width and height) and position (x and y coordinates) the individual gap identifier. By default, Gap 1 is linked to the token A1. You can remove the gap by pressing the Trash can button. If you set Same size in the Main Setup, the system will automatically update all gap identifiers to the same size.
    2. Depends on the type you have selected in the Main Setup: text, rich text and math, or images. You can remove a correct answer by pressing the Trash can icon.
      • Plain Text: Enter the correct answer in the bottom text box. The answer may also contain digits.
      • Rich Text and Math: Click Edit rich text under the bottom text box to enter rich text. A text editor will pop up. To write math (LaTeX) press the Sigma button located on the toolbar in the text editor.

        Interface for editing correct answers.

      • Image: To upload an image locally from your device, click Upload image.
    3. Interface for adding correct answers.
      1. Click in the question's edit mode (where you entered the question text) and select +Insert to add a gap (drop area).
      2. Move the gap (drop area) to desired loaction on the background.
      3. Press Add correct answer to add a token (drag element).
      4. If you enable the option Reuse of alternatives, the choice Select correct answer from other gap will appear under Add correct answer. By choosing this, you can select which gap you want to select the correct answer from.
      5. Add text, rich text, math or image, depending on the gap type you have selected, to the token.

        Interface for adding correct answers.

Known limitations

The combination of a large background image and long words or sentences in the tokens placed to the right side of the image can cause the question to be too wide for smaller screens. Currently, horizontal scrolling is not possible for candidates.

We recommend previewing the question set on smaller screens. If in doubt, place the tokens above or underneath the image, which would create a need for vertical scrolling (which is possible for candidates).
