Duplicate questions and Question sets

Duplicating a Question Set or a Question in Inspera Assessment is useful for reusing content from the item bank. When a copy is made, every part of the original is duplicated, including question text, images, PDF attachments, scoring rules, and alternatives. Changes applied to the copy will not affect the original.

This article explains how to duplicate questions and question sets, and clarifies what happens when you edit content within a copied set.

Understanding duplication

Duplicating content creates an entirely independent copy. This action is securely stored in the log for future reference.

  • Naming Convention: A copy of a question set will be named the same as the original, but with "Copy of" as a prefix (e.g., "Copy of Original Question Set"). This also applies to questions, whether they are copied as part of a question set or on their own.
  • Privacy: A copy of a question will not be shared automatically; it is private to you.

How to duplicate Questions and Question Sets

    1. Go to Author and select theQuestions Question Sets you want to copy.
    2. Either click more next to the question/question set, then click Duplicate,

or click on the question/question set, then in the action banner select Duplicate.

    3. A confirmation message will appear. Read it carefully, then click Continue to confirm the duplication.

    4. The copied question/question set will become available in the list alongside your other items.

Questions that are part of a question set can also be duplicated directly. To do this, open a question set and click the duplicate icon under each specific question you wish to copy.

What happens when you edit questions in a copied question set?

A copied question set has no connection to the original one because the questions themselves are also copied. This means changes made to the copy do not affect the original.

  1. Imagine you have a question set named "A" that contains two questions named "BB" and "CCC."
  2. You make a copy of question set "A."
  3. A new question set will be created, automatically named "Copy of A."
  4. In addition, the questions within the original "A" will be copied, and these new copies will automatically be named "Copy of BB" and "Copy of CCC."
  5. Question set "A" and "Copy of A" are now entirely independent of each other.

If the original questions "BB" or "CCC" are edited directly through the question bank, you will receive a notification that they are changed when you open question set "A." The new copies ("Copy of BB" and "Copy of CCC") are not affected by this.

Conversely, if the questions "Copy of BB" or "Copy of CCC" are edited directly through the question bank, you will receive a notification that they are changed when you open question set "Copy of A," and the original question set and its questions are not affected.

Important note on naming and duplication

If the name of a question is too long (typically more than one sentence), it can sometimes cause issues when attempting to duplicate the question set.

Resolution: You can avoid this problem by keeping the names of your questions shorter, ideally limited to one sentence. If you encounter this issue, you can resolve it by either renaming the problematic questions or by exporting the question set as a QTI file and then importing it again.
