The question is answered by typing one or several lines with numbers and mathematical expressions.

The Math Working question type allows candidates to demonstrate their step-by-step calculations and thought process when solving a mathematical problem. Candidates have access to a mathematical palette with symbols and simple formulas directly within the question.

Question layout

In the question's edit mode, you can do the following:

  1. Replace text with desired question text.
  2. Add math (LaTex), files, tables, links, PDF, images and / or audio clips to the question text.
  3. Set general options for the question type. Read more about general options for questions

Specific options

Clicking on the interaction element (the math working area) provides access to specific options unique to the Math Working question type:

  • Prompt: Write an explanation text for the question. The text will appear in the workspace. "Fill in your answer here" is set by default. 

Candidate experience

Candidates interact directly with the Math Working question by entering one or several lines of numbers and mathematical expressions.

  • In the question, the candidate can add (1), duplicate (2) and delete (3) rows. 

    The candidate can add, duplicate and delete rows at any time and anywhere in the design of the answer.

  • Candidates access a math palette (formula editor) by pressing the Sigma symbol (Σ) to the right of each row. This palette typically consists of two tabs: Basic and Advanced.

    The Math Symbol Palette can be customized to meet the specific needs of the question you are authoring. (For more details on creating your own Math Symbol Palette, refer to the Math Symbol Palette article.)

If you want to use Math Working and simultaneously have the answer automatically marked, it is possible to combine Math Working with the Math Entry question type in a Composite question type. This allows candidates to show their calculations while still enabling automatic scoring for the final answer.
