Writing Math expressions with LaTeX

  • Updated

You can write mathematical expressions and equations directly within your question text using LaTeX. This feature enables you to create precise mathematical content for your assessments. Note that Inspera Assessment does not support the import of external LaTeX packages.

This article explains the two methods for inserting LaTeX code: direct input via LaTeX mode and guided input via the math editor.

This feature requires activation. Please contact the Service Desk to activate it for your Inspera Assessment tenancy.

Using the Math editor for guided input

The Math button provides a dedicated editor window for inserting LaTeX, which offers a preview as you type.

  1. Click the Math button on the question editor toolbar. This will open the Math editor window.
  2. As you write your LaTeX code in this window, it will render in the preview section underneath, allowing you to see the output immediately.
  3. When you are finished, click "OK" to insert the rendered mathematical expression into the question editor.
  4. You can double-click any previously rendered LaTeX code within the question editor to reopen the Math editor window and make further changes.

Using LaTeX mode for direct input

If you are confident writing LaTeX code and prefer not to interrupt your writing flow, you can use the direct LaTeX Mode.

  1. Click the { } (LaTeX Mode) button on the question editor toolbar to turn it on.

    • Mac OS: ⌘ + ⇧ + M
    • Windows: Ctrl - Shift - M
  2. Write your LaTeX code directly into the question editor alongside your normal text. In this mode, the code will appear in its raw form and will not render automatically as you type.
  3. Once you've finished authoring the question (or a section of LaTeX), highlight the LaTeX section within your text.
  4. Then, click the Σ (Sigma) button to designate it as LaTeX code to be rendered.
  5. Clicking the { } (LaTeX Mode) button again (turning it off) will then render all the flagged LaTeX code within your question text.
