This article explains the Invigilator experience using Chromebook PWA. It explains the specific scenarios requiring an Invigilator password, details known issues related to the Google SSO session, and provides workarounds for technical limitations in the Chromebook PWA environment.
Invigilator password
An invigilator password will be required if:
- The candidate needs to exit or resume the test.
- The system reloads (e.g., the candidate uses the refresh button during the test).
- The candidate needs to go back to the test after viewing a URL attached in the question.
Known issues and workarounds
This section details specific operational challenges and limitations of the Chromebook PWA environment and outlines how to handle non-standard situations and required workarounds.
Google SSO Session
If a candidate logs in using Google SSO and exits via any available route, the Google session is not forgotten and will not be cleared when they exit the application. This is a known issue.
To mitigate this:
Use the Google Admin setting Erase all local user data (found in Devices > Chrome > Settings > Device Settings > Sign-in settings).
The impact of enabling this setting:
- The Google session is forgotten.
- Local device data is deleted. This shouldn't be a concern for incenter tests.
-
If a candidate exits the application while offline (which they must do by pressing the physical power key), answers given while offline will not be saved if they log back in.
The risk of data loss is high in this scenario. However, before forcing an exit, the candidate can still use the Save submission as a file option inside the menu (hamburger icon) to protect their answers. This is considered an edge case, as the probability of losing internet connection is low in in-center tests.
Reload button
The reload button did not work in the legacy application. Due to the technology limitations in the PWA, the reload button works. If the candidate presses the reload button, it will require the invigilator password on refresh.
External link navigation
When a candidate navigates to an external link used in a question during a test, they will require an Invigilator password to resume the test and return to the exam content.
System error: "This app has to run as a kiosk app"
If a candidate encounters this system error:
Use the following steps to restore:
- Use Ctrl+0 to reset the default Zoom value.
- Press the physical power key on the Chromebook
- Then select either sign out or shut down to exit the application.
- The candidate can log back into the application, and they will not see this error.
