The PDF Panel feature in Inspera Assessment allows you to attach PDF documents that display alongside your questions. This provides a way to offer supplementary information or replace parts of your question with a detailed document.
This article explains how to attach a PDF document, outlines its limitations, and provides useful tips for optimal use.
How to attach a PDF
When a PDF is attached, it will be shown to the left of the question in a separate panel for the candidate, and the candidate can resize this panel. The PDF will not be visible in question edit mode, please preview your question to ensure it is displayed correctly.
- In the question editor, within the Question Options panel (on the right), click Upload PDF.
- Browse your device to find and upload the relevant PDF file.
Important limitations for PDF Panel
Be aware of the following limitations when using the PDF Panel:
- No Links in Lockdown Browsers: PDFs attached via the PDF Panel cannot contain active links if the test is used within Inspera Integrity Browser or Safe Exam Browser (SEB). If a candidate clicks on any links, they will exit the lockdown browser, requiring an invigilator password to re-enter the test.
- Internet Connection Required: An internet connection is necessary for the PDF panel to be displayed to the candidate. If a candidate goes offline during a test and then navigates to a question with a PDF panel, it will not display until an internet connection is restored.
- Language Versions: If your question has several language versions, the PDF must be added to each translation individually, regardless of whether the PDF content itself requires translation.
- No Direct Download: PDFs added to the PDF panel are not directly downloadable by the candidate, even in open browser tests. As a workaround, candidates can use their browser's "Print" feature to "Print to PDF," which may allow them to save a local version of the PDF.
- Recommendation for Downloadable PDFs: To allow candidates to download a PDF directly, we recommend using the "Insert file" option from the toolbar in the question editor (covered in "Inserting Files and Links in Questions" article).
Tips for PDF display
- Rotate PDF: To rotate your PDF within the viewer, hover over the PDF and type 'R'.
- Symbol Rendering: Depending on the amount of zoom in the PDF Viewer/browser and the font used for the text, some symbols (like mathematical symbols such as "=") may not always render properly. Always ensure that you test your PDFs and select a font that displays symbols consistently.
