Setting marks and grades (Collaborative grading)

  • Updated

Inspera Assessment offers various collaborative workflows for Graders to set and confirm marks and grades for tests.

This article explains different strategies for collaborative mark setting, details how to resolve conflicting marks, and outlines the process for final grade confirmation.

Collaborative marks and grades settings

This setting applies to both tests that use committee-based grading, and tests that don’t use committees.

Test settings allow you to define how Graders set and confirm marks, whether or not committees are used. Inspera Assessment supports both private marking (sometimes referred to as double-blind marking) and shared marking, where the process is more open and collaborative.

It is crucial to decide which marking workflow you want to use before any grading takes place on the test, as switching workflows can have significant implications.

Warning about switching workflow

It is critically important to decide which marking workflow you want to use before any grading takes place on the test. If you decide to switch from private marking to shared marking (or vice versa) after Graders have started working, any marking that has already occurred on that test will be cleared. This will result in the loss of existing marks and grades. Other types of workflow changes will not reset marks or grades.

Private marking and results alignment

Also referred to as double-blind marking, in this workflow, Graders initially work individually. Marks and grades set by individual Graders remain private to them until they confirm their own grades. Once a Grader confirms their grades, they are then shared with co-graders for alignment.

Require graders to align marks

This feature requires activation, please contact the service desk to activate.

When selecting Individual marks and grades you get the option to select Require graders to align marks. When enabling this, Graders are required to set the same mark on each response.

If there is a conflict in marks (Graders have given different marks for the same question), the final grade cannot be confirmed until the conflict is resolved.

For detailed guidance on how to resolve conflicting marks, refer to the How to resolve conflicting marks article.

Shared Marking

In this workflow, the grading process is more open and collaborative from the start. All marks and grades are shared immediately. When a Grader sets a mark or a grade, it will replace any previously set value. Graders typically begin in the final grading workflow step (and grader contributors on the test will start with the status Has confirmed).

Question assignment

Within Shared marking, there is an option for Question assignment

This allows you to individually assign specific questions within a test to specific Graders. This creates a more flexible way for graders to divide their workload (for example, assigning all essay questions to a certain Grader).
