This article is a comprehensive guide to grading a Multiple Attempts test. It explains how to grade individual attempts, how to grade the overall assessment, and what information is available to Graders and Planners.
Understanding Multiple Attempts grading
You can evaluate Multiple Attempts tests using a final grade or achieved marks. A Planner may prefer marks over a grade because marks provide a more granular assessment of the candidate’s performance. This allows them to better understand a candidate’s strengths and weaknesses.
Graders can evaluate each individual attempt and the overall assessment from their respective grading workspaces. The goal of this process is to give feedback that encourages a candidate to perform better on a subsequent attempt.
The system calculates the overall marks based on the individual attempt-level marks and the final grading logic (Highest, Average, or Latest). If a test does not use marks, for example if the test is an essay question type, the Grader can manually grade the overall assessment at their own discretion.
Grading at the attempt level
Graders can evaluate each individual attempt a candidate submits. For each attempt, Graders can assign marks and/or grades, and provide feedback using annotations and explanations. This feedback encourages candidates to perform better on the next attempt.
- To evaluate a specific attempt made by a candidate, a Grader can access the grading workspace for that attempt by going to the attempt-level test and clicking on Open in Grade.
-
Within the grading workspace, a Grader can assign marks and provide feedback.
- If Performance based progression is enabled, a Grader has the possibility to flag a candidate for the next attempt. All the candidates flagged for the next attempt will be enrolled on that attempt at the time of confirmation by the Grader. A Grader can make this decision by checking the Permit new attempt for the candidates.
Grading at the parent level
Once all individual attempts are marked, a Grader can choose to provide an overall grade for the candidates.
-
A Grader can go to the overall multiple test's grading workspace to see the total marks for the overall test, which are calculated based on the Final results criteria in the test settings.
-
A Grader can also view the details for each attempt by expanding the view. They can see marks and grades, if available, for each attempt taken by a candidate.
- A Grader can also see the decision taken at each attempt if Performance based progression is enabled.
-
A Grader can provide an overall grade to the candidates
- If the attempts are not marked and only graded, the overall assessment can be graded at the Grader's discretion.
