Important: This guide is meant to help you set up a test via Moodle. However, it is not a replacement for the official Moodle documentation, which is expected to be up to date. There may be some variations between the Moodle guide presented here and the official one as Inspera has no control over the changes on the Moodle platform.
After the Moodle Admin has configured Inspera as an LTI tool in Moodle, teachers can now create tests in Inspera directly from Moodle. There are two main steps:
- Create an Activity in Moodle
- Launch the Activity from Moodle into Inspera - Only after this is done will the test be created in Inspera
Moodle allows setting up custom parameters at the test level if they are not set at the tool configuration level. Check out this section.
After a test was created, the teacher can still launch the test in Inspera to edit, monitor or grade it.
Create an Activity in Moodle
The first step is to create the activity in Moodle.
- Login into Moodle as an instructor on the course in which you want to create the activity
-
Next to your profile icon, make sure Edit Mode is enabled. Edit Mode is what enables instructors to edit course content
- Access the course in which you want to create the activity
-
Click on the Course tab if it’s not automatically selected
- Navigate to the topic where you want to add the activity
-
Select + -> Activity or Resource
-
Select the Inspera LTI tool from the list
-
Fill the name of the Activity and, optionally, the Activity Description
For best practices, each assessment should be given consistent naming conventions like course/unit code and title.
-
If you want to use deeplinking to help set up your test, open the deeplinking window by clicking on Content -> Select content. For more details on the deeplinking please check our documentation.
- Define the custom parameters if applicable. For more information on which custom parameters may make sense in your use case, please refer to our documentation on custom parameters
- Do not forget to hide the activity if you do not wish your students to see it yet
- Save the activity. This can be either
- Save and return to course: you will be redirected to the course where you can find the activity in the list
- Save and display: you will be redirected to the activity you just created (still in Moodle)
Launch the Activity from Moodle to create the test in Inspera
After the activity is created in Moodle, as described in the previous section, you need to launch the activity so that the test is created in Inspera.
- Login into Moodle as an instructor on the course in which you want to create the activity
-
Find the activity and click on it. This step works in both Edit and non-Edit modes
If you clicked on “Save and display” on Step 12 from the last section, you can skip the previous steps and just click on “Open in new window”.
With either option you will be redirected to the Deliver module of Inspera with the information you defined pre-inserted.
Configure the test as you wish and at the end activate it. For more information on how to create a test, please refer to our documentation.
Launch the Activity from Moodle to edit, monitor or grade test in Inspera
After creating the test following the steps in the previous section, you can launch it again whenever you want, following the same steps. You will be redirected to Deliver or Monitor or Grade, depending on your role. By default you are always redirected to the Deliver module.
You can then edit the test (the editable settings depending on the test status) or go to the Monitor or Grade modules, depending on the action you want to take.
Change custom parameters
You can define the custom parameters when creating the activity as mentioned in Step 10 of Create an Activity in Moodle.
If you wish to change them, you need to:
- Login into Moodle as an instructor on the course in which you want to create the activity
- Next to your profile icon, make sure Edit Mode is enabled
-
Identify the activity you want to edit and click on Edit settings under the three dots icon
-
Click on Show More under General and define the Custom Parameters you want. Check our documentation on custom parameters
- Relaunch the test again. Whenever you launch the test, the custom parameters will be reapplied.
FAQ

If this is the case, then you need to ensure that the tool is being allowed to be shown in the activity chooser. Go to More -> LTI External Tools and ensure that the Inspera LTI tool is selected as “show in activity chooser”.
-
If this happens, you need to configure the custom parameter enroll_candidates = true in step 10 or Create an Activity in Moodle.
If this does not solve the problem, your system admin must have set the custom parameter at the configuration level. Please reach out to them.
