Understanding Threshold Settings
In Inspera Originality, thresholds represent an administrator institutional setting that covers Exact Match, Possibly Altered Text, and Contextual Similarity.
Thresholds specify the percentage at which sentences in a submitted document are classified as Exact Match, Possibly Altered Text, and Contextual Similarity. By default, thresholds are preconfigured for optimal results; however, they can be adjusted by administrators at the institutional level or by educators during assignment configuration.
Thresholds are divided into two groups.
- Exact Match & Possibly Altered Text
- Contextual Similarity
The Exact Match and Possibly Altered Text classifications are grouped because they measure traditional similarity and are interconnected. In contrast, Contextual Similarity is separate, as it focuses on evaluating ideas' similarity and contextual relationships.
Configuring Threshold Settings
Note: Preconfigured threshold percentages are recommended, as they have been thoroughly assessed and rigorously tested to ensure accuracy in identifying Exact Match, Possibly Altered Text, and Contextual Similarity.
Exact Match & Possibly Altered Text
The Exact Match and Possibly Altered Text classifications use a shared slider interface because they are interconnected. Adjusting the maximum percentage for Possibly Altered Text will automatically adjust the minimum percentage for Exact Match.

Note: The minimum percentage for Possibly Altered Text can be adjusted independently without affecting Exact Match.
Contextual Similarity
Contextual similarity delves into the relationship between the contexts of those sentences. Users can adjust the threshold for contextual similarity as needed.
By default, the threshold can only be lowered to 50% to prevent broad matches and potentially inaccurate results. The contextual similarity threshold ranges from the set percentage to 100%, meaning any value between that percentage and 100% will be flagged.
E.g., if the threshold is set to 80%, all matches between 80% and 100% will be flagged.
